Sign Club (2017EvergreenTag)

Description

Poppy O’Guinn Steele founded Sign Club Co. with a mission to eliminate the isolation of Deaf children, thereby improving their personal, academic and future-career prospects. Ninety percent of Deaf children are born to hearing parents, and 75 percent of those parents never learn sign language, leaving these young people vulnerable to high rates of abuse. Academically, Deaf children graduate on a 3rd-4th grade reading level and enter the labor force at much lower rates than their hearing peers. By teaching sign language in schools and the community, Steele seeks to foster friendships between the hearing and the Deaf, a project which boasts the benefit of improved reading scores and fewer behavior problems among hearing children, as well.
