Efforts underway to get food from farms to needy

WNET

Description

As food banks have struggled to meet huge demand from the millions of people out of work, it’s been very tough to see farmers have to bury produce, dump milk and euthanize hogs.
but when restaurants and schools abruptly closed so did the demand for farmers’ food.

The good news-- some states are helping to pay for this food so it doesn’t go to waste. the u.s. agriculture department is spending $3 billion to get farm products to food banks and a senator is seeking $8 billion more for the effort.

New york created a $25 million program to help food banks buy products.
in iowa, $130,000 has been raised to pay for the processing of pigs.
in wisconsin, a food distribution cooperative that laid off employees has won a bid to help supply food banks
