Gulf Coast Life: Life for People Who Are Visually Impaired During Pandemic

WNET

Description

Throughout the month of July WGCU is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act with the “Move to Include” initiative. It’s a nationwide public media effort that seeks to motivate people to embrace different abilities and include all people in all aspects of life.

This week we’re exploring life for people who are visually impaired during the coronavirus outbreak and the social distancing guidelines that have come with it. WGCU’s Andrea Perdomo recently did a story about Lighthouse of Collier, a Naples-based non-profit with a mission to foster independence. One of the voices we hear in that story is Maggie Saldana. She lost her vision in 2017 but had continued working as cosmetic manager. First we talk with her to get more of her story.

And then we talk with Dalesha Richardson & Manny Gimenez. They are a couple who have been sharing their life together as a legally blind couple on their YouTube channel, called Dalesha’s Life. They say the hope is that viewers will become more comfortable and familiar with legal blindness and legally blind people in general.
